Is is possible that the character known as Jesus Christ, found in the Bible, was fabricated?

Could the founders of the Catholic Church have at the very least, embellished the actions and abilities of some random guy - could they have created him completely? Is there any other supporting text indicating that Jesus ever really existed (outside of the Bible)?
