Will running a stuffed animal through the wash get rid of mildew?

I have a stuffed Cookie Monster, and i recently discovered some kind of dirt/mold/mildew so i ran him through the wash, just a regular stuffed animal cycle, and detergent, (no bleach because of the color) and he came out clean as new. Would this get rid of any mold/mildew? Please help, I love him so much!
