Where do you get the idea God/religion is not in school?

Religion is most definitely in schools, in the form of many names like First Priority in my High School. And the teacher of My American History cl speaks of it everyday which makes a lot of kids uncomfortable. I don't know if it really is possible to separate church and state because people don't abide by rules.
