Has anyone ever sent their child on a fight by themselves?

I am in the US so I don't know if it is different here or not. When my brother was younger, my mom sent him on a flight by himself. Since he was an unaccompanied minor, she was allowed to go beyond the gate with him and wait with him until he boarded his flight. He was preboarded and sat near the attendants. When he got where he was going, the attendant walked with him to his dad who was allowed to go past the gates to pick him up. Again, this was in the US and there was no customs involved so I am not sure how will it be for you. Your best bet would be to ask the airline.
