Is it absurd for me to forego UC Berkeley and UCLA in favor of a Cal State...?

There is absolutely no reason someone should look down on a Cal State. However, UC's tend to have stronger reputations within the academic world. Also, I think you should be able to switch majors after you start cles. Almost all CSU majors are offered in UC's.
