'97 Tracer makes "clunking"/"popping" noise?

When I turn the wheel in either direction when moving slowly, for example back out of a parking space, there is a slight noise that sounds like a creaking or popping. The steering seems very straight and accurate. It doesn't pull to either side going down the highway and there are no weird vibrations or anything else to indicate a problem. What could be causing the clunking/popping noise? Even though the car is 11yrs. old, its only got 36k miles on it. I quickly looked over the CV boots and I saw no rips or tears and the rubber seems very supple still.
